I found out that my 4th grt. grandmother's maiden name was MITCHELL (also spelled Mitchel). She was born in Maine (so she said in the 1850 Brunswick, ME census) around c1794 (according to age given in the 1850 census). In her marriage record from Brunswick it says she married "Capt." Joseph MoodEy (spelled with the 'e') and "Miss" Hannah Mitchell both of Brunswick, recvd. their marriage certificate on Dec. 6, 1818. However, in a cemetery record from Brunswick in May of 1825, when a daughter died at age 3, Hannah states her maiden name as "THOMAS" and the child's last name is Thomas too. The Father is listed as "Capt." Joseph MOODY (spelled this way and how it has been seen spelled any other time). I believe Hannah's family names included both Thomas (Toma/Tomer/Tomah/Socktomah various spellings), and Mitchell. The Mitchell's, Tomah's, Neptune's etc. are all related among the Penobscot and Passamaquoddy Indians. Joseph and Hannah's son Joseph D. Moody born c1819 (I'm guessing, no birth record has ever been found for him), was an Indian doctor in Lowell, MA and in the 1870 Lowell census when the Indians Finally had a category of their own for race....my Dr. Joe; as I call him, was listed as race- 'Indian' but born in Canada. Also living with him and next door to him was a family named BARNEY whose daughter claimed to be Indian and also born in Canada as did the girls mother (but the mother's race appears to be as white). I believe this family was Indian as well but did want to fully reveal it, but their 15 year old daughter did when her race was marked as "I" born Canada. There are a lot of mysteries surrounding my Indian family and one thing is for sure...they hid and hid well, passed for whites as many New England Indians do/did and what became of my Dr. Joe, his mother and his father and family is still a mystery. I can find no death records, burial records etc. for them. If anyone can help me to locate my Indian family, I would be most greatful. Thank You. Notify Administrator about this message?
