Searching for Passamaquoddy Indians using the name MOODY who were living in Canada, Maine or MA (or anywhere in New England). My 3rd grt. grandfather who used the names Joseph D. Moody or John D. Moody or sometimes just J.D. Moody was born around 1814 in either Canada or Maine. He claimed both places, was an Indian doctor (herbalist/healer) in Lowell, MA from about 1860 to 1876/77. He is listed in the Lowell census' in 1860 as well as 1870 and in 1870 his race is listed as "I" - Indian. (1870 was the first year the census' had a category for Indians). He was also listed as an Indian doctor in the Lowell city directories during those years as well. He married twice, 1st in Ipswich, MA 1841 and 2nd in Lowell, MA 1863. To my knowledge he had at least 6 maybe 7 children who all claim to have been born in MA and ME. Most of them claim Gardiner, Kennebec Co., Maine as their place of birth but NO records are found for them their. In 1851 there was a J.D. Moody listed on a Kennebec Co., Poll Tax list but I can't remember what town it was for...might have been Hallowell or Gardiner. There is another man who I've emailed with also named MOODY who is looking for his Passamaquoddy Indian family as well. His grt. grandfather was born in Perry, ME on the Reserve there, so I know there were MOODY Indians now. Whether they were born with that name or just using it I have no idea, but I would like to know about this Please. I have been searching for a long time to find out about my family. Anything at all greatly appreciated. Thank You. Notify Administrator about this message?
