The 1790 census for Surry Co., NC page 184 lists a NOIL WADDLE. The household includes one white male 16 and over, 2 white males under 16, and 4 white females.
Land records in NC mention property on Roaring River and Elkins Creek. Those water bodies are near the border of Surry and Wilkes Counties. I think Noel's farm was probably on the Surry/Wilkes county line along the Roaring River/Elkin Creek watershed.
The 1830 census for Wilkes Co. NC, page 343 lists a NOEL WADDELL. The household includes 1 male 30-40, one male 70-80, and one female 60-70 years old. All are white.
This means that NOEL was born between 1750 and 1760.
Both Wilkes and New Kent records often used the spelling "Waddill" or variants.
The St. Peter's church, New Kent County VA records list two NOEL's born 1750-1760:
** NOEL son of GEORGE & SUSANNAH WADDILL born Sep'r 29, 1753. **
** NOEL son of JOHN AND HANNAH WADDIL born August 6, 1754. **
Both the Noel son of George and the Noel son of John fit the age listed for the Noel in the Wilkes Co. North Carolina census. Our Noel in Wilkes Co, NC could have been either of them, or another Noel altogether.
Two Virginia marriage records show a Noel Waddell. One shows Noel being married to Eliza L. Watkins in both Petersburg, Dinwiddie County Virginia, and in Bristol, Washington County, Virginia on 1 March 1786. The other record reflects Noel marrying Elizabeth Carter in Halifax County, Virginia, June 30, 1786. The latter has been assumed more likely to be our ancestor, but I don't know what evidence would suggest that.
