John vs. Jonathan - Signer of Watauga Petition

Worth S. Ray in his book "Tennessee Cousins" lists a John Waddell as a signer of the 1776 Watauga Petition. However, all the sites I've seen on the webpage indicate it was a "Jno. Waddell." I gather Ray made a mistake and the Watauga Association has determined it was Jonathan.

So who was this Jonathan Waddell? It couldn't have been Jonathan the son of immigrant John Waddell and Rachel Quee that everyone writes about. That Jonathan wasn't born until 1779 (he later married Hannah Greenway).

Would appreciate any information on who this individual was and how (if at all) he was related to immigrant John Waddell. Thanks!
