Peter Ingles Waddell / Patricia Shearer

I am attempting to do some research for my grandmother on her Waddell/Shearer line. She is the daughter of Peter Winn Davis (Compton) and Ida Belle Wheeler. Her grandmother was Alice West Waddell, daughter of Peter Ingles Waddell and Paticia Shearer. Grandma's father, Peter, told her repeatedly that his mother was 1/2 indian. This would be Alice West Waddell. All my research traces her strictly back to Scotland, none of her ancestors appear to have touched foot in the states. Does anyone have any suggestions on where this idea may have come from. I have seen pictures of Peter and he definitely has an "Indian" look about him, but unless it is on his father's side I can't find it. Perhaps he was mistaken and the indian is on his dad's side instead. Any help would be greatly appreciated.
