Priscilla was the first wife of Hugh Swearengin, Nancy was his second wife. He married Nancy about 1831-32 when he was about 55 years old and she about 21. Wade was born Jan. 1, 1830 and his mother Priscilla did not appear in the 1830 census as Hugh had no adult females in his household. It is believed that she died in childbirth or from complications arising from childbirth. Hugh had two complete families. He had 6 or 7 sons and 3 daughters by his first wife and had 10 children by his second wife. His first known child was born in 1805 (my ggg-grandfather Eli) and his last was born in 1849. He was 29 years old (b. 1776 Anson Co., NC) when his first known child was born. He died sometime after 1860. All of his children by his first marriage spell the name Swearengin. There are several different spellings passed down by his second family including Swanagin and Swaringin. Also the spellings in the Census are all over the place, differing from census to census probably spelled like it sounded to the particular census taker and the Swearengins being Dutch may have effected the pronunciation. To this very day I hear local people refering to my family as the Swearingers, Swearengims, and Swearingtons.

Hughs father Van lived close to Jane in 1790 and I don't know his wife's name but he was born about 1750 and Hugh (the oldest son) was born in 1776. Hughs first wife Priscilla would have been born 1780-1790.

Wade appears in the 1850 census in Lawrence Co., Arkansas living in the household of Benjmin Stewart. In 1860 he is in Lawrence Co., Missouri listed as Wade Swarington. Two of his brothers (Eli and James) settled in Greene Co., MO (what is now Douglas Co, MO) about 1847. Three of his brothers (William, Levi and Hugh) stayed in Jackson Co, TN (Hugh appears in the household of Tobias Gipson in 1860). Wade's brother William (whose wife was Maranda) died 1850-60. Eli died 1854. Levi died 1860-70. Wade lived out his days in Lawrence Co., MO and died in 1924 at the age of 94. His death certificate says his father was Hugh, mother unknown.

We may never know if there is a Wade connection for sure but it sure looks like there was some kind of connection even if not marriage. Possibly a friend or neighbor of high regard. Hugh was neighbors of Hampton and Downey (Dowery) Wade in Jackson Co, TN and his father Van was neighbors of Jane and Holden in Anson. Do you know if Hampton or Downey were descendants of Thomas and Jane. They seem to be the Wade family with non-traditional names.
