Richard Wade's Wife Griselle Was Not a Dabney, maybe Clements or Coleman
The only reason Grissele the wife of Richard Wade (and mother of Lucy Wade) is thought to be a Dabney is because her son William and his wife ANNE CAWTHORN named their sons Dabney, Abinadab, and Jonadab. (See Below). But,ANNE CAWTHORN is the one with the Dabney connection. Her brother was named William DABNEY Cawthorn. Her father Christopher Cawthorne is thought to have married a Dabney (the name recurs among his descendents), at least one family researcher believes it is Sarah Dabney. ANN CAWTHORNE would have named her son after her mother's family. (Some genealogies on the Internet show the wife of Christopher Cawthorn to be an unknown Derbry -- probably due to an easy misreading of colonial handwriting). There is therefore no reason left to believe that Griselle is a Dabney.
So, who is Grissele the wife of Richard and the mother of Lucy Wade. I don't have any idea who the father is, but I believe the mother is Elizabeth Clements b. abt. 1677. Elizabeth is the daughter of Benjamin Clements c 1655 - c 1712 and Grizille (various sp.) Coleman. Benjamine and Grizelle lived in Glouchester VA, neighbors to the WADES of that county. They named two of their daughters Griselle (the first died in infancy) Of their other children the ones most likely to be the mother of our Grissele is Elizabeth bap. Dec 1, 1678, although one of the twins Mary or Sarah is also possible. (bap. January 5, 1683/4). Griselle might also be a Coleman, the name recurs in that family too and the Clements and Colemans are connected.
I will continue to work on this line, but am convinced that Griselle the wife of Richard is not a Dabney. By the way, Griselle is almost certainly from the surname Grizel.
Quote:" Aubrey H Starke published an article entitled “Some Problems in the Morriss-Wade Genealogy,”in Genealogies of Virginia Families from the William & Mary College Quarterly Historical Magazine, Vol. 4., in 1981. She notes that William Wade, Richard’s son, and wife Ann (Cauthorn) Cawthorne, begot several children. There were three sons, Dabney, William Abinadab and Jonadab Wade. A contributor to her article suggested that “Abinadab and Jonadab are “Portmanteau” names, achieved by combining the Biblical names Abner and Jonah with the first syllable of Dabney.” The parents played a similar game with the names of the five daughters, Rosannah, Joanna, Hannah, Anna, and Susannah. Conversations at the family dinner table must have sounded rather melodic. I descend from Susannah Wade and her husband, Samuel Coleman Morris."
