I can give you some information about Capt. William Wagenseller. But first, there is a great interview, done in Hamilton, with his wife. If you do a Google search:
WILLIAM WAGENSELLER HAMILTON BUILDER SIXTIESThe second listed site, a Tripod site, has the interview.
We have trace the Wagenseller/Wagenseil family back to Kempton, Bavaria, Germany in the 1400's.
The following information comes from the book - History of the Wagenseller Family in America, by George W. Wagenseller, published 1800.
The first family members in America came in 1734 and settled in Philadelphia County. They came at the request of William Penn.
In Germany they had been Huguenots. In Pennsylvania they were Mennonite. Many of them were religious leaders, doctors, authors, and military officers.
William father, George, was born in the Red Lion Hotel in Chester Co, in 1788. (There really was a Red Lion Hotel and William's father George was not the same George as the one who wrote the book.)
William's mother was Leticia Cavender.George and Leticia had seven children, William was the 4th. William was born in Beaver Co. PA on June 24, 1821.As adults three of the children, including William, spelled there names with an o, Wagonseller.
George and Leticia migrated with their family to Ohio in 1825 and then on to Crawford Co. IL. in 1839.
At the age of 14 young William left home and went to the far West.He returned to Crawford in 1841.
William married Elizabeth Waldrop in Palestine, Illinois on Feb. 4, 1844.While he was away at war, Elizabeth died in 1864.
William served in Company F, Fifth Illinois Cavalry. He was a Captain. He entered as a 2nd Lt in Oct, 1861 and was later promoted to 1st Lt. and then Captain. He resigned in July 1864, three months after his first wife's death. While he was in the army his father, and mother, his wife and one of his brothers all died.
After the war he married again to Eliza A. Gomer, on July 30, 1865. They resided in Hamilton, MO.(At the time the book was published it says he was 77 year old and living in Hamilton.)
William had 9 children, six with his first wife and three with his second wife.
Louisa born 1845 died May, 1856 (Two more of their children died the same year.)
Thomas Harlan born 1847 (Listed in the graveyard as a Capt.)
Allen born 1849 died March, 1856
Mary E. born 1851 married and moved to Los Angeles
Jo. D born 1853 lived in Ill.
Martha born 1825, died Oct 1856 (Third death in one year)
Three children born with second wife, Eliza:
George M. born July 17, 1866 in IL. Last heard from in Indian Territory.
Elender Pearl, born June 4, 1868 in MO, and died Oct 16 1894.(Probably Nellie E. in the graveyard)
Jessie, born March 11, 1872 in MO, still resided at home with William and Eliza when the book was published in 1800.Jessie was a school teacher in Hamilton.
