Troutman/Walcher connections
Hi,
I research the Troutman family of NC.Two Troutman brothers married two Walcher sisters. These were Jacob Troutman (1788-1829) and Peter Troutman (c1790-c1855), sons of Peter Troutman (c1761-1806) and Catherine Lingle.Jacob Troutman married Christina Walcher (c1795-1850) and Peter Troutman married Margaret Walcher (c1794-bef Feb 1829).Peter Troutman married Elizabeth Culp after Margaret's death.
Jacob and Christina had 6 children who lived to adulthood.I have seen some databases listing more children for Jacob Troutman and Christina Walcher, but they are confused with other Jacob Troutmans who lived in the area.In 1824, Jacob was security for the guardianship of the children of Frederick Walcher, his wife's uncle.Jacob Troutman died in 1829, leaving Christina pregnant with their last child, Sarah Mariah Troutman.Christina died in 1850, just before the census was taken. She is in the 1850 Mortaility Census of Cabarrus Co, NC, it says she was a widow, 54 yrs old, died of pneumonia in June 1850.Her oldest son, John Absalom Troutman, was appointed administor of her estate by the Cabarrus Co, NC court. In the 1850 Census, there is a household headed by John Absalom Troutman with his siblings, Jacob Eli, Christina Rebecca, and Sarah Mariah. The other two children of Jacob Troutman and Christina Walcher were in MOntgomery Co, IL in 1850 - Mary Ann Troutman, wife of George File, and Simeon Troutman.Soon after the 1850 Census, all but John Absalom moved to Montgomery Co, IL.The following are Cabarrus court records:
Oct 1824.Walcher, Frederick dec'd.Daniel & Leah Walcher orphans.George Lingle
guardian with Phillip Waggoner & Jacob Troutman security
Oct 1829.Jacob Troutman, deceased.Administration to Christina Troutman.
Apr 1830.Jacob Troutman, deceased.Christena Troutman year's allowance.
Oct 1831.Peggy Troutman, deceased.Administration to Peter Troutman.Peter Culp,
security.
Oct 1831.Monroe & Eliza Troutman.Peter Troutman guardian.
April 1845.Monroe Troutman, orphan of Peter.Jacob Isenhour guardian.
April 1845.Monroe Troutman, orphan of Peter.
Jul 1850.John A. Troutman appointed administrator of Christina Troutman, dec'd.
Peter Troutman and Margaret Walcher had one or maybe two kids.Monroe Thomas Troutman was definitely their son.The Eliza Troutman in the Oct 1831 court record may have been Margaret's daughter born out of wedlock before she married Peter.Note that the court records call Monroe Troutman an orphan, even though his father was alive. This is actually fairly common. What was meant is that Monroe TRoutman stood to inherit from from his mother's side of the family, namely the estate of his grandfather, Henry Walcher.Frederick Walcher (who I believe was a son of Henry Walcher) and George Barringer were the administrator's of the estate of Henry Walcher. In a 1842 deed in Cabarrus Co, NC, Peter Troutman sold the title to his land to Frederick Walcher and George Barringer for one dollar.Apparently, Peter Troutman had borrowed money from his father-in-law, Henry Walcher.Because of this debt, Monroe Troutman would not get anything. So, to protect Monroe's share of the inheritance, Peter gave up the title for the land. The wording of the deed says that if Peter paid the money he owed the estate in a certain amount of time, he would get the title to his land back.Otherwise, Frederick Walcher and George Barringer would sell the land to pay back the estate, which is what ended up happening. The deed does not mention Margaret or her children by name. Here is a quote: "... whereas the said George Barringer and Frederick Walcher as the adminstrators of the estate of the late Henry Walcher deceased late of the said county of Cabarrus as on record will appear and whereas the said Peter Troutman had married one of the daughters of the said Henry Walcher - and the said daughter the wife of the said Peter had died before and in the lifetime of the said Henry Walcher, her father, having 2 children now alive, one illegitimate and born before the marriage of the said Peter with the daughter of the said Henry Walcher and the other born in wedlock being the son of the said Peter in lawful marriage as aforesaid... ".Normally, when a child's mother died and the father was still living and the child inherited some money or land from the mother's side of the family, the court appointed a guardian for the child other than the father to hold onto the money or land until the child came of age.One more thing on Margaret Walcher - I found her baptism record at Organ Lutheran Ch in Rowan Co, NC.The birthdate is not given, but she was baptized on 14 Nov 1794 as Peggy Walker, daughter of Henry Walker, with P. Karel & wife (Peter Corl and wife Anna Eve Troutman) as sponsors.Henry had another dau baptized at Organ Lutheran.Rosina Walker was born 13 Jan 1796 and baptized 12 Mar 1796, dau of Henry Walker, Mich. Ritchie & wife sponsors.I did not find any other baptismal records for children of Henry Walcher, but I was not looking very hard either.
Frederick Walcher (Henry's son) married Delila Blackwelder 22 Sep 1827 in Cabarrus, the marriage bond spells his name as "Walker".
There is a deed in Cabarrus from April 1831 between "Christina Troutman widow of Jacob Troutman deceased" and Frederick Walcher in which Christina sold her share of the estate of Henry Walcher deceased to Frederick Walcher for $100.The land of Henry Walcher is described as lying on Dutch Buffalo and Coldwater Creeks.
None of the records I found spell out the relationship between Frederick Walcher and Henry, Christina, and Margaret Walcher, but I am pretty sure he was Henry's son (a little confusing, since Henry also had a brother named Frederick).
I have one other Walcher connection through my Bushart line.Elizabeth Bushart (sister of my ancestor, Henry Bushart) married Daniel D. Ridenhour, who was the son of Catherine Walcher and Nicholas Ridenhour.Catherine Walcher was a child of Adam Walcher, along with Henry and Frederick.
I have seen info that says Adam Walcher died in Montgomery Co, IL in 1801.This is very, very unlikely.Illinois did not become a state until 1818, and Montgomery County, IL was not formed until 1821.A lot of his descendants wound up in Montgomery Co, IL.I think that area of Illinois was still controlled by Indians in 1801.It is a lot more likely that Adam Walcher died in Montgomery Co, NC.Stanly Co, NC was formed from Montgomery Co, NC in 1841.Likely, Adam Walcher died in the part of Montgomery Co, NC that later became Stanly Co, NC.Stanly Co, NC is right next to Cabarrus county.
