Pat,
My few Adams ancestors that I've located were originally in Henry County, Alabama. Both Randolph Adams' and Maryann Chandler's families resided near each other near Abbeville on the 1870 census. After their marriage in 1873, relocated to Jackson County, Florida appearing on the 1880 census. My grandfather John Wesley Adams, Sr. was born in Jackson County in 1880 after the census was taken. Their next child was born soon afterwards back in Henry County in the Gordon, Alabama area. Gordon was situated on the Chattahoochee River which separates Georgia and Alabama. Our local library has a book about Gordon, written by Martha Lee Dickson, entitled "Gordon, Alabama: Pioneer Riverboat town". Adams residents of the Gordon area from about 1880-1910 mentioned by Ms. Dickson in her book were Aiken, Cora, C.H., John Odom, Myrtle Lee, R.R., and Wilma. I have not been able to connect any of these names to my family, although I think there's a good chance that some or all could be connected.
Randolph and Maryann's oldest daughters Ida and Della were married in 1891 and 1898 respectively in Henry County, both "at the home of the bride's mother near Pansey." Pansey, Alabama is very near Gordon and many known Adams and Chandler relatives are buried in the Liberty Baptist Church Cemetery there. This portion of Henry County became part of newly-formed Houston County in 1903.
By 1900, Randolph and 3 of their children were deceased. The remaining Adams family appeared on the 1900 Henry County census, Page 3a of Precinct 1, Gordon on lines 41-44. Maryann's name was shown as Assinda, rather than Arrinda. Daughter Ida Adams Habron was in the adjacent household. Maryann died in 1901 at age 46.
I discovered the name of Randolph's father on the 1870 census as David Adams, born c.1797, further evidenced by David's written consent for Randolph's marriage. According to the family grapevine, Randolph's mother may have been full-blooded native American.
John Wesley Adams, Sr. relocated to Columbus, Muscogee County, Georgia about 1924, died there in 1927, and had an unknown relative living in Phenix City, Russell County, Alabama.
Hope this info helps.
Jim
