Morning Brendan

You will find the English & Welsh Statutory Registration BMD Indexes on Find My Past-

http://www.findmypast.co.uk

These are scans of the original Index Pages from 1837 to 1983 as found in the main Registry Offices, containing from about 20 to possibly 300 names per page, grouped alphabetically, in Quarters for each year.

Each Quarter covers the whole of England & Wales, so there can be several pages for SMITH, whilst a rare name might not appear at all, although in the alphabetic range for the page.

If you are inexperienced at doing such Searches, try first looking for someone whose details you know fully - finding them in the appropriate Index will give you the experience needed for the real Searches.

From 1984, it is a fully computerised Index making use of normal Search parameters.

With both types of recording, take a note of the Quarter, Location and the (Folio) References. For an pre-1984 one, this will be along the lines of-

FUNNING (Name Group Header)
----"--- Frank J T Pick AMJ 1912 Neath 11 a 1981

This is the Birth of Frank J T Funning, mother's surname Pick, in the April-May-June Quarter of 1912, (registered at) Neath, Reference 11 a 1981

Earlier Birth entries will not have the mother's Surname, similarly later Deaths have the Date of Birth.

To get the exact dates etc, you have to order copies from the GRO in Southport Lancashire, costing about £7 and taking about two weeks, supplying the Index data above.

The 1981 is simply a sequence number; and is NOT the year.

=================

Regarding the father, Charles, you may be able to get his Entry Papers for the Excise Service by making use of a specialist genealogist - check in the family history magazines etc.

I got a copy of one from back in 1834.

There may also be an Excise Pension Record.
