In reading up on my ancient Welsh ancestors [to begin my work on that line] I found what can only be patronymics. "ap" must mean son of and ferch daughter of, but what does "ab" mean? examples:
Dafydd ab Owain Gwynedd
Dafydd ap Gruffudd
Google was no help. Latin says abo means "remove" I wonder if ab could mean "father of" besides needing to itentify the correct generation, This word matters a great deal because the female Welsh names are anything but recognizable as of that gender except Nest. My only clue was the "ferch" preposition.
