[I understand that ancestry.com now has the full BMD data searchable for free, but it’s not a resource I’ve used myself. (Most such research was pre-computer days for me!) Below is my standard advice for otherwise finding BMD data.] There are two sites to help you identify birth, marriage and death registrations and to send for the certificates. (Civil Registration started in 1837). A birth certificate will include maiden name of mother. A marriage certificate will include fathers’ names of both bride and groom. The two sites are: 1. http://freebmd.rootsweb.com/cgi/search.pl and 2. http://www.findmypast.com/HomeServlet 1. FREEBMD is an extensive, but incomplete, index being compiled by volunteers. Good coverage pre-1900, not so good post-1900. This is free to search, so a good place to start. 2. FINDMYPAST is the official site, with the complete indexes. With this one you have to pay to search, as well as pay for the certificate. Not expensive. Also has lots of guidance for starting your family history, and other resources, such as other censuses. Both sites will tell you how to order certificates, but the direct link is: http://www.direct.gov.uk/en/Governmentcitizensandrights/Registeringlifeevents/Familyhistoryandresearch/index.htm Prior to 1837 there was no civil registration of BMD. At that point you’re needing parish registers for baptisms, marriages and burials. That’s a whole new field of research … another story …! Good luck! Sonia Notify Administrator about this message?
