Marybeth,

The naval service records are stored at the National Archives. Go onto the National Archives website and order NAFT Form 86 (service records). These are free. Fill out the form with your ancestors name, the ship, the Mexican - America War, and all other information that you know of.

If your ancestor served on more that one ship, then he would probably have a multitude of service records since seaman signed up for a cruise and not an enlistment.

He may or may not have a pension. For pensions get NAFT Form 85 and fill this out.
