Finding 1812 War Records

Where does one start looking for 1812 war records if the
only thing you really have is the name Joseph Patterson
and the fact he was b 3/19/1779 in Pa. I know that by
1812 he was in Campbell Co.,Ky as his son Robert was
born that year in Campbell Co. I have no proof he was
actually in the War, just FAMILY LORE has it as such.
I have found a few Joseph Pattersons, just not the right
one! Any help or suggestions would be appreciated. (I
know that the one in a Oh. militia was not him because
I ordered the records)
