Possible War of 1812 headstone fraud in PA
I know a man who had a headstone put up in PA, at US government expense, for a supposed ancestor who was supposedly in the War of 1812.
The headstone he replaced had a first initial on it, a last name and no way to determine the year in which the person (male or female, adult or child) was born.
I did the research and the person who supposedly was the War of 1812 veteran could not possibly have been that veteran (who died in CT in 1828). The only record of that veteran’s service was an entry in an 1871 book that said he was in the town militia for a few days or a few weeks during the War of 1812.
I have known about this for five years (and still have the man’s email to me bragging about it) and I just cannot forget about it.
Just about all of the information on the headstone is false and the US government has paid for it.
The least the man could do would be to publish the application he used to get that free, expensive headstone.
