number of colts for him.

visiting at the home of Mr. and Mrs. W. M. WOOD.

the graves of Jennie AMOS, Charlotte SHAW and Mrs. MINTONYE.
The U. S. department of agriculture says that one pound of paris green
dissolved in 250 gallons of water, sprinkled on the vines, will kill the potato
bugs. Those who have many potatoes would do well to try it.
The festive fire-cracker in the windows of our merchants in the only
indication of the approach of the glorious fourth, but with a goodly supply of these
the small boy can have all the happiness that noise can produce.
A colored man with a guitar and a white man making a pretense of singing were
on the streets Tuesday morning. They took up a collection afterwards but
failed to realize anything. Such fellows ought to be assisted out of town.
Mr. and Mrs. Arthur MCCARTNEY and Harry WOODBURY of Weldon, arrived in town
Tuesday evening. Mrs. MCCARTNEY and Harry were on their way to Mt. Ayr to
visit relatives near that place. Mrs. C. P. JENNINGS, of this place, accompanied
them.
Mrs. Dr. DOOLITTLE and Adda BAKER went to Chariton the first of the week,
being delegates to the state convention of the P. E. O. order in session there.
Misses Maggie VAIL, Jessie and Lizzie WILSON, and Hattie BURNS. Mrs. Alice
YOUNG and Mrs. Elsie ARNOLD also went up to attend the convention.
Rev. Robert BEER of Garden Grove conducted services at the Presbyterian
church Monday evening. The ordinance of baptism was administered to the two
children of Rev. and Mrs. ATWOOD, the infant daughter of Mr. and Mrs. H. E. CLARK

County Superintendent ROY furnishes us the following list of teachers from
Garden Grove and vicinity who are registered at the normal institute now in
session at Leon: Myrtle MILLER, Cora MILLER, Norah MCNEILL, Millie SPARLING, Emma
BAY and Lillian BRANT. There are doubtless others who will attend, but who
were not yet registered.
The state weather report says that refreshing showers fell last week over the
greater part of the state. Central and northwestern Iowa are the dryest
regions. Corn and potatoes are doing well, but small grain and hay are reported
at half a crop. A great deal of millet is being sown, where oats have been
plowed up.
Rev. William FLANAGAN has accepted a call to preach to the Presbyterian
church at Emeline, Jackson county, He is also to preach on alternate Sunday
afternoons at two other charges. Mr. FLANNAGAN is an earnest, conscientious young
man and the churches at those points can rely on his putting forth his best
endeavors for the building up of the churches under his care. He left last week,
expecting to spend a few weeks with his uncle, J. B. SIMMONS, at
Marshalltown, before entering on his work.
Our friend, John CARNAHAN, brought us in last week a well preserved copy of
Vol. 1, No. 1 of the Garden Grove Enterprise - the first paper published in
this place. It is dated November 6, 1869. H. M. BELVEL was the editor. It is
well filled with advertising but most of it was from neighboring towns -
Osceola, Chariton and Corydon. Of the eleven columns of advertising, five columns
were of drug stores, from which we judge that the proprietor was a pretty good
patron of dealers in "medicine." We have filed the paper away and if any of
our friends would like to look at it they can by calling at this office.
