I have a problem...a "brick wall"...and I am desperately searching for someone who may possibly be able to help. I am searching for information regarding my Great Grandmother Emely/Emily/Emmly Louisa. Her maiden name was Waughtal; she was born on 10 Mar 1837 in Wisconsin. She married George Bretthauer (my Great Grandfather) in 1862 in Muscoda, WI. They had nine children. They lived in Muscoda, WI for about 20 years, then moved to South Dakota, then North Dakota, then Saskachawan. Eventually, they moved to Washington State where Emily Louisa died in 1916; George died in 1920 in Iowa, but his body was shipped back to Washington where he was buried next to his beloved Emmly. I have all kinds of documentation from the point of their marriage, including marriage application (handwritten) and WI marriage records (typed). I can trace the whole family (that eventually included my dad) by following state censuses. I know that George Bretthauer
immigrated to the U.S. in 1852 on the Bark Anna from Germany and ended up in Wisconsin.
I can not find Emely Louisa Waughtal or any name close to that on any census prior to the 1870 WI census, although I have the paperwork from their marriage. On every census, Emily states that she was born in WI and that her parents were born in Illinois. She always spelled her name Waughtal. I have searched every Waughtal/Waughtall/Waughtel/Waughtel/Wachtal/Wachtel in the world, but no Emely Louisa. On various census' Emily's name was spelled: Emily, Emely, and perhaps Emma. On their gravestone (possible misspelling), her name was written "Emmly." I can forward any or all documents you may need...if you can help. I have also considered that she might possibly have married a Waughtal and her marriage to George was number 2. However, all her children of record were Bretthauers. I have a handwritten note attached to her obituary in 1916 stating that her father's first name was Henry...this was written by someone at the time, perhaps George Bretthauer and could be incorrect. I have also considered that she may have been illigitimate...and although her name was Waughtal, perhaps her mother with another last name raised her. This led me to search Illinois and WI census for just "Emelys" but to no avail. I just don't know, but REALLY want to know.
I read on someone's message board that Waughtal was or is pronouced "Waffle" (like the breakfast food). On the 1860 Grant County, Watertown Census, I found an Emely Wafley, age 23 (correct if born in 1837), born in WI, working as a domestic with the Thomas and Elisabeth Waters family. I tried tracing Emely Wafley...to no avail. However, Watertown is very close to Muscoda, and somehow, I feel very certain that this might be my Emely.
Having faith that she was not an alien from outerspace, I keep digging and perservering to find her family. I even have pictures of her when she was quite old. If you have any ideas or could be of any assistance to me in my quest, I would be forever in your debt. If my pictures or other documents would be of any assistance, I will gladly send them. And, of course, I would be willing to share any and all of my research.
