Thomas Weller of Tonbridge, Kent, 1602-70
If you are connected to Thomas 'Spadebeard' WELLER, the attorney who defended Tonbridge Castle in the English Civil War - beware! Many have been misled by a memorial of five generations of WELLERs in Tonbridge Parish Church, which states that Thomas was son of Richard and Agnes.'The Weller Papers' make the same statement.
It has now been proven that Thomas was in fact son of Richard and Susan.Richard whose wife was Agnes died in 1612 and not 1616 as on the monument. He came from Horsham, Sussex. He and Agnes did have a son Thomas but he was not 'Spadebeard.'
I am grateful to Brad Card for helping to solve this puzzle.I can supply full details to anyone interested.
Richard.
