Hi Ron:My Welte's came over from Switz. about 1853 and had settled in Bracken Co., KY by 1860.Most of them stayed there, my Dad was born there but left in his early 20
's.They were Catholic. In the 1860 census they were still living together with their Mother Monica (Margaret in the census) as follows:
STEPHEN WELTY, 24, FARMER, 500, GERMANY
MARGARET,60"
AGNESS22"
FRANKLIN21"
JOSEPH19"
JOHN17"
I don't know yet if their Father died before they left Switz. or before they got to Bracken Co.His name was John.
I also found what I am sure were married sisters, Dora and Theresa, in the 1870 census.I am sure you have found the name spelled several different ways as I have but by 1910 it had become Welte.
Being new to this country and still learning English must have been the reason for Monica being Margaret and Germany given as place of birth as they surely spoke German. All other census' have place of birth as Switz.
From another searcher, there was a Welte family that came over the same time as mine and settled in Iowa.Their names were Frederick, George and Anton. They came from Germany but were known to visit family in Switz. and two of them married sisters from Switz. Yet another searcher has a Jacob Welti(census spelling) b. in Switz.about 1810, don't know when they came over but he settled in Iowa too.He had sons Jacob and Frank and a dau. Theresa that I know of.The names in your family are different from mine but they could very well be related back there somewhere.I don't know yet where in Switz. mine came from.I am still trying to find them on a ships list.
