The Wefsel and Wessel issue
Some messages on this board indicate that people have seen the Wessel name spelled as Wefsel or say that the name was changed from Wefsel to Wessel when the person came to the U.S. from Germany.
This confusion arises from reading German records, in which the name is written in the old German (Gothic) script. In that script, a double "s" in the middle of a word is written in a way that makes the first "s" look like an"f."If you look at it carefully, you will notice that the lower loop is not the same as the lower loop of an "f" in modern handwriting. The name is Wessel, even though it looks like Wefsel.
This is an issue that we Wessel researchers can ignore. We all have enough other problems to work on.
