Helen.
I e-mailed information below looks like you did not recieve it.G.W.
John was chr 11 Feb 1827 his father was James mother Jean (sometimes Jane) Crooks they were married 26th May 1815 in Midlothian John had at least one brother and sister James chr 13th Nov 1831 Mary 17th Apr 1836.
Managed to find some of my research with this information.
It seems John had some more kin Jean chr 26 Sept 1824 in Humbie and Margaret born 1826 who Married James Eckford 13 th June 1858 in Heriot.Remember this area of Scotland is rural most people worked on the land and moved around the same area`s if Johns father came from the same area his father and mother may have been James and Janet Neilson.
In the IGI it also shows a Jean 1821 and John 1823 born in Barony which is Glasgow to James Whitelaw and Jane Crooks it might be a different family all together if it were your family these two children would have died at birth.(very possible the names are okay)
Catherine was born in balfron about 15 to 20 miles from Glasgow it is possible they moved to Glasgow whereMilton is on the Balfron side of GlasgowJohn moved there after marriage maybe because he had ties with Glasgow only doing my detective work which comes up trump sometimes.
George Whitelaw.
