Hi Sue,
Thanks for the info about Elland.I have found the Whiteley's in my line in the graveyard records for the now defunct Ebenezer Methodist Chapel in Soyland, all the way back to 1800 with Samuel and Hannah.Interestingly there were 5646 Whiteleys in Yorkshire alone in 1881 census, and over 1800 just in the Halifax parish in 1851.There must therefore be many branches of the family living in area in the 19th century, and generally very localised.Since my family were all working in the cotton mills of the Rydale valley, they were probably part of a large population that exploded from the 1780's and declined dramatically after 1850 with the advent of steam power that moved the industry to Halifax and Leeds.
I would therefore not be confident that my ancestors would be linked to the Elland Whiteley's later than the early 1700's.What is the earliest Whiteley you have in your records and where did he/she come from?
regards
Andrew
