Is It True that Nathaniel & Sarah Ford WHITNEY of Maine named sons....

Is it really true (I can't find a solid source for this info)that Nathaniel WHITNEY b. April 1680 and wife Sarah FORD b. Kittery, ME actually named two sons "Nathan" and "Nathaniel"??
This seems so obsurd to me since "Nathan" is already a shortened version of Nathaniel.
Most everyone who has an online genealogy seems to have accepted this and have both sons with their separate wives and families, howevever I am not so convinced these two are from the same parents.
It would be much more convenient for me if they were as I am related via both lines.
I am just looking for some sort of solid verification for this, if its true I'll gladly accept a VR's citing.
