Fisk/Whitney, Connecticut

This may be a little off the wall, but I've hit a dead end. Trying to find parents of Samuel Fisk, born in 1757 in Connecticut. I know his age is correct, because the family has accurate descending records for him. He was 93 for the Tioga County census records of 1850. There is a Stratford, Connecticut vital records list, showing him born to a Samuel Fisk, Jr, or II, on October 9, 1757. Mother is Hannah Judson. Problem is that there is also shown in the same records, a Samuel Whitney, born on the same date, and with the same mother, father is Samuel Whitney. Both marriage dates are also the same---1771. Can go back no further for the Fisk info, but the Whitney records seem quite complete. Apparently, Samuel was only three when his mother, Hannah, died. There seems to be a history of a Fisk taking guardianship of some of the Whitney children along the way, and wondered if it was possible there was a name change here, where Samuel Whitney took the name Fisk. Said it was off the wall, but couldn't find descendants of the Whitney, Samuel, but there are descendants of my Fisk Samuel.
