Joseph A Whitney, b. May 1855, SD, is listed as a step-son, residing with with Isaac F. and Elsie Smith in Brooklyn Township, Lincoln Co., SD in 1900. Presumably Joseph's father had died and his mother had remarried.

Unfortunately, the 1890 census would probably have revealed a great deal of information, had it not been largely destroyed by fire.

I found someone who could have been him on the 1880 census, though he does look a bit young.
