I have a Francis M. Whitson born "abt 1854" to Francis J. Whitson and Martha Ann G. Noell in the Boone/Gallatin County area of KY.
Francis J. Whitson prospered as a farmer in KY. After Martha died, he married her widowed younger sister Elizabeth in 1865 in Gallatin Co,KY.
In his later years, Francis J. gave up farming and moved to KS. He spent his last 40+ years as a Baptist minister.

1880 Census- Mitchell Co, KS
1900 " Cowley Co, KS
He died Oct, 1909 in Cowley County. Cowley Co is on the KS/OK border. A fair amount of Whitsons headed to Cowley Co from KY. Why Francis J. chose Mitchell Co first is a mystery.
I don't know if this is your guy...if his son came with him to KS. I think it's worth investigating further. Contact me if you agree.
