Dear Marilyn, in 1597 it was ordered that all existing
parish records kept since 1538 on loose paper sheets be
entered into "fair parchment books".Mere spellingmistakes
were expected and I have found by looking in original parish
record books the spelling of surnames can vary mostly when
the hand writing changes i.e differentcleric.
At this time well in to 1800s many ofour beloved ancestors could
not read or write if she or he went to register a birth or
death or marriage, name was asked and was writtendown as
cleric thought it was spellt. for the informer did not know.
My own family of Whyman has early spelling in parish records
Weynam. Wimon .Wyman 1540 Wyman 1600 one ancestor went from
Westmill to Americamy family stayed Wyman until the first
Census in 1801 when farmerEdward Wyman was recorded as
Edward WHYMAN and family.this spelling is as to this day.
Also we must not forgetthat a lot of registers before 1733 are written in a very simple Latin some even later although against the law.
And if this helps l have come acrossAlice Wimant ch. 1611 Great
Bowden Leicester
Robert Wyman GT. Bowden leic. m. 1542.
hope this helps.John WHYMAN.
