Mary Van Slyke was born in New York about 1787. In state census returns she said in Herkimer, which of course didn't exist in 1787. Possibly abt 1801, and certainly by abt 1805, she married ----- Root, with whom she had five sons, Joseph N. James, Samuel, Lyman P., and Leonard R.
She married second Samuel Smith of Blenheim in Schoharie Co, with whom she had William Chardo, Thomas Peaslee, Moses Pendell, Margaret V., Elizabeth and Cynthia Ann. Mary probably died in Blenheim, Schoharie Co 17 April 1877.
Some family traditions call her Nancy, and some traditions have her going to Wisconsin and dying there, but these are not accurate, although some of her children, both Root and Smith, went to Ripon, WI, and then elsewhere in the west.
Looking for where she fits into the Van Slyke family.
