Four wagon trains left from Grant Co/Richland WI for the San Joaquin valley town of French Camp,CA and founded and settled Manteca, CA. Two Sperry brothers, Geo. W. and R.O., (soon followed by John Austin Sperry) left in 1851; the Cutler Salmon train with James Reynolds and brothers in 1853; then Joshua Cowell came in 1861; and finally the 100 wagons that made up the train identified as the Reynolds/Harelson/Graves/Howel train in 1864. Wm. Douglas & Caroline Sperry's second son Joseph (1829-) remained in WI,. The Sperry's oldest daughter, Morania M.Sperry (1830 OH -1918 CA) married Randolph Elliott, their first son Wm Douglas Elliott (1849 WI- ) named for her father, Wm. Douglas Sperry (1810 NY - 1861 CA). This son stayed in WI, while Randolph and Morania and their younger children followed her brothers G.W., R.O, and John Austin Sperry to CA, after the brothers made enough money working in the gold mines to send for their parents and family. Brothers G.W. and R.O. did not marry, but established a home for the large family in the French Camp, and Manteca area where they were grain farmers. These pioneers are all buried in the historic Manteca CA East Union Cemetery, on the corner farmed by the Reynolds.
