I just returned from Vernon County where I spent a couple weeks researching family history, taking photographs and visiting newly found relatives. If there are forum members interested in being able to locate their family's origial homesteads and farms I can recommend two good resources for you.
I purchased the 2007 plat book produced by the Vernon County 4H (about $15) and the 1879 plat book produced by the Vernon County Historical Society (about $12). These two books plus photocopies ($1 each township) of the 1898 plat book helped me to identify and later photograph most of my family's early farms and homesteads. The vintage plat books have indexes listing land owners and the 2007 book helped me to identify the current owners and roads leading to the exact location of the original farms.
Being able to see the original farms that sheltered my family meant a great deal to me. I wanted to have a sense of what they must have felt for these farms. Having photos of the places my family settled upon immigration to the US, is an amazing and wonderful thing. I would recommend this experiential research process to anyone.
