Eber Willey of Vermont/NY/VA/WV
Posted by: Arley Meadows (ID *****3444) Date: March 23, 2003 at 18:04:40
  of 1872

Still trying to pin down the major details of "Old Eber" Willey. See if you disagree with any of the following (especially if you
have any DOCUMENTED idea where he was between 1818 and 1825):

EBER WILLEY (1797-1870)
Born July 5, 1797, in or near Peacham, Vermont. His parents were supposedly Ahijah Willey and Susan (Susannah) Grant.

Served in the War of 1812 as a private in the Rochester (NY) 29th Infantry, enlisting April 18, 1814 and being discharged
June of 1815.

His “War of 1812 Bounty Land Grant” for a track in Illinois was “delivered” to John Miller, Troy, NY, on May 23, 1818.

The next documentation as to his location is a marriage bond in Monroe County, VA, dated April 2, 1825. He does not show
up in the Monroe County, VA, census for the year 1820. At this time, his location between 1818 and 1825 is unknown (at
least to me).

In 1825, in Monroe County, VA, he married Rebecca Maddy, daughter of Matthew Maddy and Judith Christian. They had
the following known and/or probable children:

1) Justus Willey , born about 1827 (only documentation found so far for his name is in the book “The History of Summers
County.” Justus supposedly served in the Mexican War and died in 1850 or 1851 from wounds received in that war. There is
a male in the household of Eber Willey in both the 1830 and 1840 census’ that fits the age group for Justus)
2) Nancy Willey, born about 1828; married Isaac C. Vass
3) Judy Willey, born about 1834; married Allan Syms
4) Lucinda Willey, born about 1835; married Rice C. Vass
5) Rebecca Willey, born about 1837; married Henry Epling
6) Unknown female, probably born 1838-1840 (in the 1840 census there are 3 females under 5 years of age listed in the Eber
Willey household)

In 1844, in Monroe County, VA, Eber married Judah Syms, daughter of Robert Syms and Sarah Paynter. She was born in
1824 and so was about 27 years his junior. They had the following known children:

7) Eber Willey, born 1846; married Eliza Ellen Lilly
8) Alma Willey, born 1848; married 1) Sarah Meadows and 2) Sarah Wickline
9) Millant (?) F. Willey, born about 1849 (possibly Millard Robert)
10) Sira W. Willey, born 1849 (probably later - 1850 to 1852); married Clara Jane Milburn
11) Abijah Willey, born 1853; married Etta Huffman
12) Susan Willey, born 1855; married William Wikel
13) Sarah Catherine Willey, born 1860; married Samuel Henry Hartwell
14) Frank (Grant?) Willey, born 1861; married Rosa Huffman
15) John Willey, born 1866; married Emma Green Bush (?)

(Note: There were sufficient gaps in the years between some of the children for there to have been other unknown children
born)

Eber Willey died in Monroe County, WV, on February 1, 1870.
