David Wilson and Jane Weir (Wear) of Greene County
Forgive the lengthy post, but a lot of information has been posted that is not correct. The following family history has been documented as best it can. I did not do all the original research.Over the past 25 years, I have personally met and corresponded with descendants of this family. Most have the history of their individual families well documented. One descendant of John W. Wilson is a professional genealogist with published works.
Sources for names, dates and locations include Wilson family Bible, tombstone records personally visited and from Find A Grave, descendant records, court records and county vital records. I am in possession of a large number of photographs of this family. Most are from generations later than the one documented below.David and Jane Wilson lived ONLY in Greene County, Blount County, McMinn County and Meigs County during their lives. Both were born in VA.
David Wilson born VA,30 January, 1774.Died Meigs County, 19 December 1851.Buried at Beech Springs Cemetery, Bradley County.Jane Weir / Wear born probably VA,14 April 1775.Died 18 September 1846, Meigs County. She is also recorded as Jenny. Some records show the surname as Weir while others show it as Wear. They were married in Greene County 18 October, 1796. Her father was named Hugh. David's parents are unknown. They had nine children as follow:
John W. Wilson born 14 August, 1797, Greene County.Died about May 1859, Bradley County. He settled near Sweetwater in Monroe County.Date of death or location of the burial is undetermined.Married Elizabeth Campbell 20 August 1820 in Knox County. She was born about 1802 and died after 1870 in Bradley County, TNJohn and Elizabeth had ten children. There is speculation that the W stands for Weir/Wear but this has not been proven.
Hugh Preston Wilson was born 01 October 1799 in Greene County. He died in McMinn County about 1891.Research of tax records shows that he paid taxes in 1890.In 1892 taxes were paid by Mrs. E. E. Wilson (widow). His grave was apparently not marked, but he is probably buried beside his first wife in the Mt. Cumberland Presbyterian Church Cemetery at Athens, TN.Hugh first married Nancy Culton on20 February 1820, Knox County.Nancy Culton was born 01 April 1802, Blount County. She died 01 April 1875 in McMinn County. They had ten children – they settled in McMinn County around 1823.These are my direct ancestors. After Nancy died, Hugh married Elizabeth “Betsy” Sloop on 11 September 1875, in McMinn County.
Beginning in 1802, David is recorded in Blount County records. It is not clear if he moved or if the county lines shifted (Greene County was once very large).
Alexander Harvey Wilson was born 22 November 1802 in Blount County .He died 30 August 1876 in Bradley County. On 07 December 1826, he married Jane H. Swan. They had four children.Jane died 26 July 1839.Next Harve married Sarah Ross on 3 July 1840.They had five children.Sarah died 15 February 1851.Harve next married Deidra Angeline Brittain on 30 December 1851.They had three children. He is buried in Charleston Cemetery. In 1826, Harve built a new house just outside Charleston. The house still stands today, is in excellent shape and looks like a picture from House & Garden magazine.I have a photo of Alexander Harvey Wilson.
Anny Wilson was born 16 February 1804 in Blount County.Name and date of birth recorded in the family Bible.Speculation that her name could be Suzanna.I have no further records of her.She may have married ? Rice.An uunamed Rice is mentioned in David’s will.
Nancy Weir Wilson was born 01 June 1806 in Blount County. She died 12 October 1841 in Laclede, Missouri. She married Captain John Ecthison Grigsby in 1827. They had seven children. Some of the dates of birth for the children have not been documented.
Mary Ann Wilson was born 01 December 1808 in Blount County. She died 12 August 1902 in Bradley County. She married Robert Carrick Barnett around 1832.Mary Ann and her husband are buried in Taylor Cemetery, Bradley County. They had six children.
David B. Wilson was born 30 December 1810 in Blount County.I have very little information on David B. Some sources list a different middle initial.Speculation is that he died 14 June 1849 in Coles County, Illinois. This is unproven. It is not known if he married.
Jane W. Wilson was born 25 April 1813 in Blount County. She died about 1890 in Boone County, Missouri.Jane married Henry Barnhart in Blount County on 21 April 1834 in Blount County. They migrated to Missouri around 1848. They had eight children – three born in Tennessee; five born in Missouri.
George M. Wilson was born 09 December 1815 in Blount County. He died 20 October 1868 in Meigs County.George married Elizabeth Wood about 1893.They had three children. An infant daughter died at birth.George and the infant are buried in the same plot as David and Jane in Beech Springs Cemetery. On my last trip there in 2009, I found his marker for the first time – broken off at the base and some distance from the original plot.
This is the only post I will make on this topic. I will gladly share sources with anyone who wants to verify any of the information above.Contact me at [email protected]
