For David Winniford b 1758 Cumberland, VA d 1794, I havehe was m in 1780 Cumberland Co, VA to Judith Robertson b 1764 Cumberland Co, VA d March 31, 1854 in KY and buried Damron Family Cemetery, Plum Point, Adair Co., KY.
Chn:
1.Norvel/Norval/Norvell b 1782 m Susan F. Johnson
2.George b 1784 m Martha Gannaway
3.Jeffery b 1786 m Judith Gannaway
4.Judith b 1788 m Jeffery Gannaway
5.David b 1792 m Elizabeth Reagan
6.Sarah b 1792 m John T. Damron
7.Elizabeth b 1794 m William Staton
I list 12 children for Norvel, 12 for George, 5 for Elizabeth, and unfortunately, none for the other children of David.Surely there are some!
Although David Robert Beatie Winniford may be descended from George's son David, the age of DRBW's wife Rebecca Mahala Bruner b 1837 seems wrong for the two David's to be identical.Rebecca is descended from the Bruners and Stoneciphers of Greene Co TN -- next to Parrotsville, Cocke Co, TN, where the other Oregon Winnifords came from. Those Winnifords are descended as follows:
David Winniford b 1697 > George Winniford who m Wilmoth ? > David Winniford & Judith Robertson > George Winniford & Martha Gannaway > Thomas Wilkerson Winniford & Margaret Eveline Bruner > 11 children and numerous grandchildren who went to Oregon and married into the Gannaway and Ensley families among others.
My source:a printout of LDS Ancestral file data on these Winnifords, plus I think I alsosaw the same data on the GenDex.Certainly not unimpeachable, but it hangs together logically for DRBW to be of this bunch.
I do think it's quite possible that it was one of these Oregon Davids that came back to TX and caused the Black Jack Grove Winnifords so much confusion about dead David Winnifords vs live ones.I find absolutely no evidence so far that the David who was brother to William Johnson Winniford survived the Gold Rush trip.I think he died as WJW described. And after reading some of WJW's diary from years later, plus the account of the Gold Rush, WJW was clearly both a very sociable and a principled person, and apppeared to place great value on his kinfolk despite potential for strong disagreement (ex., his Mullican nephews fighting for the Confederacy).David was four years younger than WJ, and 9 years younger than Norvel, and I can't see them leaving him.
Sorry if I'm preaching to the choir here! There's been so much hard feeling in the family about the Davids, that I like to squelch that rumor every time I can.
