I have his complete pension papers, courtesy of the V.A. (His 3rd wife/widow, died in 1965.) The V.A. sent me copies of his complete file, n/c. It mainly consist of letters requesting parts for his leg and socks for his stump.

I know where he's buried (New Hope Baptist Church, Gold Dale, Virginia).

He's mentioned on page 130 of the book, "After Wounded Knee; Correspondence of Major and Surgeon John Vance Lauderdale while Serving with the Army Occupying the Pine Ridge Indian Reservation, 1890-1891." He was the last soldier/patient to be sent from there on Feb. 18, 1891.

He was sent to Ft. Robinson, Neb., where he was discharged on July 4, 1891. (I have his discharge, also.)

He later lived for a short time at the Soldiers Home in Washington, DC. (I have a cabinet card of him taken in DC about that time.) I also have a letter that was sent to him by a fellow patient, a "John Winkler" (I have no knowledge of this man.)

My grandfather was named "Clancy", an unusual name for my family. I've learned that a "Pvt. John Clancy", who was serving with the artillery as a musician, received the MoH for "rescuing comrades under fire" at Wounded Knee. It's possible that he saved my great-grandfather. Other than an image of his grave at Ft. Riley, I have no further knowledge of "John Clancy". (The image is on "Find-a-grave.com", as is the image of my great-grandfather.)
