My father told me a story about my G Grandfather Leonard Burdette Parish that could have very well been the Battle of Wounded Knee. According to the story my G Grandfather and a friend of his were riding across the great plaines in the dead of winter when they came upon a Indian Massacre as they sat there trying to comperehend what they had just discovered they thought they could hear a baby crying at first they thought it was just the wind playing tricks on them. So they sat there a little longer listening and finally decided it was a baby so they started searching the frozen bodies they were ready to give up when they found a Indian woman on the outer perimeter of the Battle she had been shot in the back when she fell she made sure she fell with her baby under her the baby was still alive. They took the baby and she lived a long life. Where they took the baby or who raised it or her name my father never would say. The reason why I think it was Wounded Knee is because my father started his story by saying sometime around the turn of the century. Wounded Knee was close to the turn of the century.
