I am attempting to confirm placement of Elizabeth Dawson Cockrell as a daughter of Edward Dawson of Allegany Cty, MD. Based on other email in this and other forums; information from Dawson researcher Pat Pulasky; and online and printed sources, I have the following Edward Dawson family in Allegany County, MD:
Edward Dawson Sr., born New Jersey, died intestate 11 Sep 1794, Allegany Cty, MD. Parents unknown.
Wife Elizabeth, died 1813
Children:
1. Isaac Powell Dawson, born 3 Jan 1768, died before 1802
2. Thomas Dawson, born 5 Sep 1769
3. James Dawson, born 24 May 1771
4. Elizabeth Dawson, born 14 Feb 1773/4 in MD (1850 census record). Married Edward Cockrell (listed in Hampshire Cty, (W)VA tax records) about 1789. 10 children. Emigrated to Delaware Cty, Ohio from Hampshire County about 1811. Died 1851, Harlem Twsp, Delaware Cty, OH. (Birth year of 1774 is listed on tombstone and Delaware Cty, Ohio 1880 history biography of son James Cockrell. Pat Pulasky records indicate 1773.)
5. Ann Dawson, born 7 Aug 1779, married Zachariah Magruder 10 Feb 1797, Allegany Cty, MD
6. Mahalia Dawson, born 20 May 1784, married Thomas Ravenscroft, 8 Jan 1806, Allegany Cty, MD
7. John P. Dawson, born 20 Aug 1787
8. Possibly Edward Dawson
Pertinent Allegany Cty, MD sources relate to the above family.
1. Will of Daniel Cresap, Sr, recorded 18 June 1796, who died July 1798, listed land bordering “land owned by Edward Dawson (deceased) and on which his Widow now Resides…..”
2. “Early Allegany County Records, 1787-1825” compiled by Cresap DAR Chapter lists:
a. February 1802. Dawson, Edward, estate. Edward Martin and his wife Elizabeth, administrators. Shares of estate paid to: Thomas Dawson; Zachariah Magruder, a Legatee; James Dawson; and Nancy Dawson.
b. December 11, 1805. Dawson Edward, Sr. estate. Second accounting. Edward Dawson, administration. Accounts paid to: Zachariah Magruder; Edward Cokorol; Mahala Dawson; James Dawson; and Thomas Dawson.
Allegany Cty marriage records include Edward Martin marrying Elizabeth Dawson on 15 Apr 1798. Edward Martin and wife Elizabeth are listed in the February 1802 Edward Dawson Sr estate record as administrators. Is this Elizabeth Dawson the daughter of Edward vice Elizabeth Dawson Cockrell? If so, then who is Elizabeth Dawson Cockrell’s father?
Response from Dawson and Cockrell researchers would be very appreciated. I have details on Elizabeth Dawson Cockrell descendants.
