This was a high media coverage event - Henry Russell age 68 and his wife, Ada age 64 were brutally beaten and robbed in a premeditated crime on Saturday morning Dec 9, 1967 at their Grocery store/home at 11708 MacCorkle Ave Cheapeake..both were taken to Charleston Memorial Hospital.. Henry died 12-20-1967 at the time he was survived by wife: Ada Daus: Mrs Deloris Skaggs of Cleveland, Ohio, Mrs Opal Morrison of Chesapeake Sons: John Henry Jr of Winfield; Billy R of St Albans Sisters: Mrs Myrtle Buenrostro of New Jersey,Mrs Rachel Wilcox of Mt Gay Brothers: Clifford and Orville both of Decota and a step brother: Leonard Stevens of Decota. Burial: Montgomery Memorial Park, London

The two perpetrators age 17 and age 18 were sentenced to life in Moundsville - in 1974 the governor in a Christmas commutation changed the sentence of life without mercy to life with mercy meaning eligible for parole in 1978. The family fought this change .. so there were many, many articles in the Charleston newspapers - I printed several but not all of them. The one thing I thought missing - was there was never any mention of prosecution or charges to hold anyone accountable for what happened to Ada. I did not find an OB for Ada but did find what appears to be her brother which mentions Ada Russell in 1978. 1930 Census Kanawha Co WV Cabin Creek #142 Henry Russell age 28 m @ 22 b.Ky parents b.Ky, Ada 19 m @14 b.Ky parents b.Ky. Opal 4 dau b. WV, Delores 8 mos b.WV. I have no connection to this family - at the time I lived in Charleston and remember when this happened and second I had a gr uncle and his wife who were attacked, he died instantly she died later - I always wondered who, why and what happened but never could find the answers.
