Frederick F. RIDDLE was born in April 1842, the s/o Sarah and Isom. In the 1850 census, Fred F. is living in Quaker Gap, Stokes, NC with his parents and siblings:
Isom 31 NC, Sarah 29 NC, William H. 12 VA, Jane 10 NC and Fred F. 7 NC.

In 1860, Isom and family are in Wise, Wise, VA, with the same family members as in 1850.

In 1870, "Isham" and Sarah are in Gladeville, Wise, VA. All of their children have left home.

I don't know if this is Isom in 1880, in Rock House, Letcher, KY. His age matches but not his birthplace and his wife is not Sarah. Perhaps, Susan supplied the info and she assumed Isom was born in KY:
self, Isom, 61, KY KY KY, farmer
wife, Susan, 35, KY KY KY, keeps house
son, Granville, 9, KY
son, Lorenzo, 7, KY
son, John, 5, KY
son, James, 2, KY
dau, Manerva, 1/12, KY

Frederick F. RIDDLE served in Co. H., 64th Virginia Mounted Infantry, CSA. More info about this unit is at http://members.aol.com/JWeaver300/grayson/64vainf.htm/.

In 1880, Fred is in Pikeville with Margaret but apparently soon to be divorced. In 1900 he and Emma are in Chapmansville, Logan, VA:
head, Fred F., 58, b Apr 1842, md 20 yrs, NC NC NC
wife, Emma B., 38, b Sep 1861, 7 chn, 7 living, VA VA NC
son, Lawrence W., 18, b Jan 1882, WV
dau, Clarice, 16, b Sep 1883, WV
dau, Iowa T., 12, b Oct 1887, WV
son, Albert W., 9, b May 1891, WV (Walter in 1920)
dau, WInnie B., 7, b Dec 1892, WV (Beryl in 1920)
son, Robert M., 2, b Mar 1898, WV (Marion in 1920)
dau, Hallie A., 5/12, b Jan 1900, WV (Hattie in 1920)

I don't know where/when Emma died but she was alive in 1930, then living with son, Walter in Logan, as a RIDDLE. Fred's mother, Margaret, was still alive in 1900, then living with another son, Jefferson, in Pike Co. KY.
