Hi Stephen
I to have an uncle KIA in WWI, mine was on the Somme, Lancashire Fusiliers. Anyway I checked a couple things for you to add to the info in the other replies, it comes together slowly honest.
L/Cpl William Golding is listed on the War Graves Commission web site www.cwgc.org.uk and you can download a Memorial Certificate and short general history, just enter his details in the search window. As to the regiment. The East & West Yorkskire's become one in 1958 (?) and are now The Prince of Wales Own Regiment of Yorkshire and they share a museum with the Royal Dragoon Guards at 3 Tower St. York, Yorkshire UK. Write to them with as much information as possible and they may be able to help. Most Regiments offer some help and advice especially for one of their own.
Also if you know any details of other family (names etc and you now know Liverpool) check out the 1901 census web site at the PRO. (You really need at least 2 names to narrow the address down)
Most people in this area (Liverpool/Manchester) have links to Ireland so I'm not suprised at your "family tale", If you do get some names email me and I'll check out the 1881 census for you.
Good Luck
