Joseph Greenhow killed 1st W.W. - help needed
If by a long shot anyone has come across a mention, a photo or anything of a Joseph Greenhow in the 1st World War, we'd love to know. Joseph was killed on 3rd Sept 1916 whilst with the West Yorkshire Regiment. We have written to the War Graves Commission, checked with all the various regimental museums, but no trace. His name does appear on the Church war memorial in his home village of Great Ormside in Westmorland but not on any memorial in France. We also have the local newspaper cutting of his reported death which also includes a photo. He was unmarried as far as we know and aged 38yrs when he died, having joined up in early 1915.
We had a professional researcher some years ago check the various medal rolls etc in London but to no avail. We have a birth certificate for Joseph and have traced him up to the 1901 census (where his surname was spelt as Greenton).
We have checked the War Graves Commission website as far as possible for mis-spellings but nothing looks like a match.
There is no known death certificate either.
We have been told often enough by professional researchers that they have never come across this happening before. So what happened to Joseph? We feel a need to get his name rightfully put on the Thiepval memorial to the missing, but without proof of his death, the War Graves Commission won't accept he existed.
We are currently trying to check the movements of the Regiment on that day etc.
Any help or pointers gratefully received.
Margaret and Martin Greenhow
