What does G. S. I. stand for?

Hi folks,

Can anyone tell me what G. S. I. stands for? I found an entry for someone I'm looking for in a 1916 Savannah, GA city directory. I know he was in the Army. He's listed, in the directory, as "carp G. S. I." (Yes, CARP, not CORP.)

In 1918 he's listed as "Sergt. U. S. A.) - that one is easy enough!

Thanks!
