per Ancestry.com:

Texas Death Index, 1903-2000
about Elmer E. Chester
Name: Elmer E. Chester
Death Date: 19 Oct 1918
Death County: Bexar
Certificate: 36188

You could send for death certificate. Official US Military Service records are held by National Archives (NARA). FYI-Many [WWI] service records were lost to a fire.

Any library in state of TX should have books that list all who served in WWI & may have info on those who were killed in war*.

To order records from NARA you need: full name, DOB, branch of service, rank (enlisted or officer), dates of service, discharge date or, in this case, date of death*; names of parents & where enlisted would be helpful. You can order online with credit card; they don't charge you unless they locate & send to you.

Someone on these boards may well be able to provide info about Texas 165 Depot Brigade. A quick internet search for "Texas 165 Depot Brigade" brought up lots of hits.

* I'm just assuming KIA, don't know
