In WWI the United States accumulated a force of about 4 million men. Only about 2 million ever went overseas. The better part of 1 million who went overseas were still training in rear areas when the war suddenly ended. So, only about 25%-30% of all troops ever got near the front.
"Depot Brigade", usually, means the soldier was one of the 2 million who never left the US. Depot brigades issued the men uniforms taught them how to march and salute and that was about it. I had a relative who was called up in September 1918 and was discharged in December 1918.
