Question

I have been trying to search for information about my great grandfather. His headstone reads as follows:

Walter H. Hills
Utah
PVT 5 RCT CO GEN SVC INF
July 4, 1895 Sept. 12, 1959

One thing I am trying to find out is what all those appreviations mean! I have gotten some ideas from other genealogists but no one seems to be very sure! If anyone can help me out I would really appreciate it!

Jennifer
