Hi Tom,
I'm hoping you are still able to access this website and see my posting to you. Three years have passed since I last contacted you and in between I've changed email addresses and can't remember my login details to change the old email address, so I've reluctantly had to re-register.
In one of your messages to me, you said "I checked the documents on line for his medal index card and it seems that he was not entitled to medals but would be entitled to the death plaque as having medals was not a requirement to get it."
I've now found out why you couldn't find the medal rolls index card. The archives are free to access for the whole of November 2008. He was listed as "Oxtoby, Charles" and not "Barker, Charles O", as you would expect. The medal rolls index card shows he was awarded the British Medal and the Victory Medal. A pity, though, that no relatives are alive to ask where they eventually went to, although I do have the same two medals that belonged to his brother, my grandpa. You were right about his regiment number, too!
Annoyingly, I can't find grandpa's entry, yet I know he was in the great war, was subjected to mustard gas in the trenches and was a prisoner of war. I have his regiment details and the letter from George V that he received on his return to England.
If you want to research any WWI names for free in November, the link is http://landing.ancestry.co.uk/intl/uk/worldwar1.aspx?o_iid=37264&o_lid=37264http://landing.ancestry.co.uk/intl/uk/worldwar1.aspx?o_iid=37264&o_lid=37264
I hope this reaches you!
Best regards
Grant
