Soldier's Journey After Registration

My question is this, what would happen to a man once he is registered? Where would he go? What would he do? Trainings? Camps for trainings? How long would he have before shipping over? Where would he have gone overseas? And how long would he be required to serve? These days I think that it is 3 years, but what would it have been in 1917?
