Your grandfather may have received a valor award, however unlikely it may seem. I found a letter written to my paternal grandmother in 1918 with only a first name and an indication that the writer was a cook. I took a chance on the military times site and found the writer was awarded the Distinguished Service Cross, 2d to the Medal of Honor. Good luck.
