If any of the folks you are interested in is living DO NOT DELAY to get whatever information you are interested in. They will not be around forever. Once they are gone that's it!
What a living person can reveal in 15 minutes could take you years to discover without that testimony.
As people age their minds do do necessarily recall instantly. But, they will remember if you give them some days to think. The trick is to not let the process get too spread out or to get distracted by humorous stories about what he did, or didn't, do on leave. If one topic is a dry hole try something else. But, keep the pressure on.
You need numbers. Serial number. Unit numbers. Military occupation (job) number. Pay grade (rank). Year in. Year out. Awards received. The names of the ships he was transported on if that's available. Every little thing helps.
If he was near the Taj Mahal he was in the CBI ,(China Burma India Theater).
