War Brides returning to the US from England

My mother in law (Dorothy Dunn) was an English War Bride and with her daughter (Carlene Dunn, 13 Months old, my wife)) came to the US. They were on the SS Brazil that left Southampton 28 Feb 1946 and arrived in NY, NY #8 on 7 Mar 1946. The question has been raging in the family that she landed at Ellis Island. My mother in Law has passed and my wife was two young to remember. Does anyone know what the process was in 1946? Where did that ship land and what was the immigration process? I believe that she did not go through Ellis Island and was put up in a hotel until she got on a train to go the her new home. Also it looks like there were two immigration places. One in England and again on the ship.

Does anyone have any information?

Thank you so much for your help.
